It explores the life experiences of her father, who is functionally illiterate and has relied on oral culture and workarounds throughout his life. As a daughter, the researcher has assisted him with administrative tasks since the age of 14, initially believing it was due to formality\u2014but later understanding it stemmed from illiteracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interview became more than a research activity; it became a <strong>relational design moment<\/strong>, strengthening the father-daughter relationship through shared vulnerability and storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Illiteracy and Work: Navigating Through Oral and Embodied Knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked how illiteracy affected him, the interviewee explained that early in his career\u2014before widespread digitization\u2014<strong>oral transmission of knowledge<\/strong> and manual labor allowed him to function effectively. He adapted to reading and writing tasks by relying on memory, dictation, and excuses (e.g., \u201cforgetting glasses\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This echoes <strong>Polyani\u2019s concept of tacit knowledge<\/strong>\u2014knowledge that is hard to verbalize but critical in practice (Polanyi, 1966). His ability to succeed in his trade despite illiteracy reflects <strong>embodied expertise<\/strong>, often undervalued in literate and administrative systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The informal mentoring of apprentices and support from co-workers functioned as a <strong>substitute network<\/strong>, enabling continued success despite structural literacy barriers\u2014demonstrating <strong>distributed knowledge systems<\/strong> (Suchman, 2007).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shame, Stigma, and Hidden Labor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interviewee described the deep <strong>shame<\/strong> and <strong>stigma<\/strong> attached to illiteracy, noting he even pretended to read the newspaper in front of his children to be a \u201cgood example.\u201d This reveals the <strong>emotional labor of maintaining appearances<\/strong> in a literate society\u2014an often overlooked aspect of user experience in public services (Bannon, 2011).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He avoided disclosing his condition due to fear of judgment, highlighting how social narratives around intelligence and literacy exclude those with different cognitive pathways (see <strong>Kuznetsov &amp; Paulos, 2010<\/strong> on \u201cdesigning for the self\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trigger for Change: Life Transitions and Identity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interviewee began literacy lessons after a serious workplace accident and the news of his daughter\u2019s pregnancy. These life events marked a <strong>transformative threshold<\/strong>, what <strong>Etienne Wenger (1998)<\/strong> would describe as a moment of identity renegotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning he had <strong>severe dyslexia<\/strong> reframed his self-perception\u2014from being \u201cstupid\u201d to being someone with a diagnosable and supportable condition. This is a powerful illustration of how <strong>language and diagnosis shape personal narratives<\/strong> and alter how individuals are treated by systems and people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you say \u2018I cannot read or write,\u2019 people think you\u2019re stupid. When you say \u2018I have dyslexia,\u2019 they see you\u2019re smart, just different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This distinction is critical for <strong>inclusive design researchers<\/strong>\u2014labels and discourse deeply affect the <strong>user\u2019s sense of self<\/strong> and how systems respond to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Role of Family and Informal Networks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The support of his daughter, who assisted with bureaucratic forms and digital systems, exemplifies how <strong>informal, intergenerational networks<\/strong> are often <strong>invisible infrastructures<\/strong> supporting individuals outside formal systems. These networks often go unrecognized in service and policy design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Design researchers must not only co-create with users but also with <strong>care networks<\/strong> that form the user\u2019s ecosystem\u2014an insight aligned with <strong>Design Justice<\/strong> frameworks (Costanza-Chock, 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reflections on Roles and Expertise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interview also reframes <strong>who holds expertise<\/strong>. The father, although illiterate, held high practical, emotional, and strategic intelligence.
